Some of Our Work as a Commercial Paving Contractor
When Pinnacle International required a commercial paving and concrete contractor when developing the Ritz and Sapphire buildings at Bute and Pender in Coal Harbour, they called Bortolo and Sons. Whenever a new building is approved for construction in Vancouver the city requires the developer to remove the existing city sidewalks and replace them with new sidewalks designed in accordance with the landscape plan for that section of the city.
Choosing Bortolo and Sons as their commercial paving and concrete contractor to complete this portion of the development, which included in the scope of work, the removal and replacement all the city street barrier curb and gutters, vehicle street access crossings into the buildings underground parkade. Along with removing and replacing all the city sidewalks.
The sidewalk designs included exposed aggregate borders around regular broom finished concrete panels. The landscape plan also included tile work and Westcoast Native Art inlaid into the concrete. All of the architectural concrete retaining walls and staircases between the city sidewalk and building exterior were also constructed by Bortolo and Sons.
We were thrilled to be the chosen for this portion of the development contract. The Coal Harbor neighborhood in Vancouver has fast become one of the prestigious areas of the city, bordering on Stanley Park and the financial district. So it was great to be able to contribute our efforts as a commercial paving contractor to help make this recently developed portion of the city as beautiful as it has become.
To directly compare the quality and standard of Bortolo and Sons work to that of our competitors, simply examine the same concrete landscape design city sidewalk that was installed around the building directly West of the THE RITZ at 1211 Melville Street, Vancouver to see the difference.

Bute and Pender St in Vancouver Downtown
Driveway Pavers Burnaby
Here we see a photo from the beginning of the project. We have already removed the old sidewalks and started to frame in the new designs and street barrier curb & gutter.
Hard Landscaping
Here we can see the project underway with concrete street barriers and architectural retaining walls already completed.
Exposed Aggregate Sidewalk
Here we have finished off the exposed aggregate portion of the sidewalks and we are now preparing to pour the normal concrete that will have a broom finish applied.
Concrete and Exposed Aggregate
Here we see the broom finished concrete after pouring and finishing. The exposed aggregate borders and inlays have been covered in plastic for protection during this process.
Exposed Aggregate Sidewalk
This sidewalk section was finished with an exposed aggregate center section and will eventually be bordered with normal broom finished concrete.
City Sidewalk Vancouver
Here we see what will become an exposed aggregate sidewalk surface, after the concrete has been poured, but prior to the addition of the aggregate to the top surface. The round areas shown will be where First Nations artwork will be inlaid into the surface.
Inlaid Artwork and Tile Accents
In this photo we see the finished sidewalk, with a number of features. We have the First Nations artwork inlaid into the exposed aggregate, surrounded by a ring of broom finished concrete. The rectangles leading to the circle are part of the tile work we added, and in the back ground you can see the concrete transitions to provide a smooth surface where a number of different angles come together at the corner.
Finished City Sidewalk
Here’s a shot of the city sidewalk next to the Ritz building. Even in a plain broom finished concrete it look great years after we completed construction.
City Sidewalk Staircases
Here we see the finished staircases along the side of the Ritz. Notice how the exposed aggregate sidewalk was transitioned smoothly into the bottom stair at the street corner.
City Sidewalk Feature Details
Tile work, retaining walls, concrete, exposed aggregate and inlaid artwork are all evident here. There’s even a manhole cover for good measure. It’s all in a day’s work for our crew of consummate professionals.
